Facilitator Mentoring and Support

Introduction

Ongoing mentoring and support plays a vital role in encouraging and enabling a facilitator to build their confidence, competence and overall capability.

Without this support a very high percentage of facilitators never apply the facilitation skills that they have learned and don’t reach their full potential.

We have therefore, developed a mentoring and support program which helps …

  1. A newly trained facilitator to successfully complete their first 3 or 4 facilitated sessions
  2. A more experienced facilitator to design and facilitate a session in which they have little or no previous experience

Newly trained and inexperienced facilitators

In our experience, a high proportion of the knowledge and skills that are learnt in most facilitator training programmes are never successfully applied.

This seems to be a particular issue because many facilitators use their skills quite infrequently. In addition, there is often quite a long time delay between the completion of their training course and their first facilitated session.

We provide mentoring and support for newly trained or inexperienced facilitators.

Normally, the focus of our mentoring and support is to help the facilitator to successfully design, set up and run their first 3 or 4 facilitated sessions.  The use of our mentoring and support service helps to ensure that …

  • The facilitators are able to successfully apply the skills that they have learnt
  • Our customers get a good return from their investment in training their people

More experienced facilitators

Even experienced facilitators will find from time to time that they are faced with running a session that they have no or limited experience of.  Therefore, we provide mentoring and support for more experienced facilitators to help them with any aspect of a facilitated session that they are preparing or that they will be running.

We help facilitators with all aspects of their work including …

  • Designing and structuring a facilitated session
  • Getting hints and tips on the best way to run a session or a part of a session
  • Learning more advanced facilitation methods and techniques
  • Their personal development by observing their performance and providing them with the feedback and advice
  • Co-facilitating an important session

We also run a one day refresher course for facilitators whose facilitation skills have become a little “rusty” or out of date. This course enables them to refresh and update their skills.
